Portrait Photography

kimAccording to Wikipedia “Portrait photography (also known as portraiture) is the capture by means of photography of the likeness of a person or a small group of people, in which the face and its expression is predominant. The objective is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person. Like other types of portraiture, the focus of the photograph is the person's face, although the entire body and the background may be included. A portrait is generally not a snapshot, but a composed image of a person in a still position. A portrait often shows a person looking directly at the camera.

Unlike many other styles of photography, the subjects of portrait photography are non-professional models. Many family portraits and photographs that commemorate special occasions, such as graduations or weddings, are professionally produced and hang in private homes.

Portrait photography is our signature we believe a good portrait will contain at least one element that reveals the subject’s personality, attitude, unique mannerisms or some other trait. Our aim is to create an image that really captures the subject.

Being the portrait photographer who has never previously met the subject is quite a challenge. It takes experience, skill and an understanding of human nature to be able to engage our subject in conversation and quickly find a suitable topic that will grab her or his interest to produce a reaction which can be captured.

We don’t provide a standard “method” to shoot portraits: we do have a few tried and tested methods which we pick and match according to our subject. The session normally lasts around 1 to 2 hours, often resulting in approximately 100 pictures, from which usually 5 to 10 will be selected. Sometimes (although not often) your best picture is your first picture, and sometimes it’s the last exposure you make. We will guide you through the process helping you prepare for the camera click and keep talking while working, the goal is also to have fun!

Light sets the mood of the picture so without good light there will not be a good picture. In the studio we have control over the light and use it selectively to create the mood we are looking for. How we light not only depends on the required mood but also the subject. Women need to be lit different to men. If we light a man to emphasize their dramatic features, the same light on a woman would highlight any wrinkles! It is a general rule that the light and shadows make the picture, but with control we choose where and what to make the shadows. This experience and passion is one strong reason why you should choose an experience professional to capture your portrait.

This is a good way of creating a specific portrait in places which would be impracticable to visit but requires skill and experience to ensure the final composite looks right. Visit our promotional photography for some examples of us substituting backgrounds. Our most successful background colors are black and natural Grey. We also support blue, green and white mainly for matching to a replacement background. Location portraits add more dimensions to the product. Examples would include location model portfolios and business related portraits. This opens the opportunity for natural light. This requires different lighting skills since natural light can be fierce and uncontrollable. When the weather cooperates we love to venture outdoors but we do this with an eye on the weather forecast and pick the time. In general early morning and late evening are the best times for light both through a window or outdoors.

A portrait photograph is a personal experience requiring many factors to be balanced correctly to achieve a great result. If you like the examples of our work then we are confident we can achieve a great result.
